WHY DO WE CONDUCT marathons FOR PERSON'S WITH DISABILITIES and Able
bodied together?
You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year
of conversation. While our main focus is on the sport, the truth is,
sports are simply the tool for accomplishing a bigger goal, to bring
hope, inspiration and the joys of achievement to Persons with
Disabilities. Persons with Disabilities run for many reasons and with
many goals, to improve physical strength; to build confidence. But
along the run something else happens that few expect, but everyone
cherishes. It is the sense of friendship, encouragement, and community
that people find while running. It is our belief that with support,
nurturing, and training, Persons with Disabilities can participate and
succeed in mainstream sports. We believe that sports help us
understand different people and surroundings better. Being confronted
with a challenge and then overcoming it by creative ways is a great
way to increase confidence and it creates lasting ties with each
other. Running together encourages empathy, discovering more about
yourself and your partner. It creates awareness at levels that help
breaks stereotypes and bring about social transformation.
Running is a great way for Persons with Disabilities to mingle in the
mainstream. Many of them, especially in India, struggle with
establishing contact with the rest of the community and often live
isolated lives. Sport helps them break free of these barriers, engage
in the outside world, realize their capabilities and create
friendships. It helps their self belief, helps communicate their view
of world, and helps to think of themselves as change-makers.
ABOUT ADVENTURES BEYOND BARRIERS-
Adventures beyond Barriers Foundation is a Not for Profit
organisation, to promote adventure sports for persons with Disability.
The underlying philosophy is that “You can discover more about a
person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” We aim to
engage able bodied individuals together with Persons with
Disabilities, in adventure sports and allied activities in a safe and
sustainable way and to bring them both together; in a journey such
that they help and learn from each other.
We hope to achieve this by creating appropriate conditions to
establish interpersonal contact, and by enabling communication with
one another, with a view to understand and appreciate different points
of views involving each other’s ways of life. As a result of this new
appreciation and understanding, issues of stereotyping, prejudice, and
discrimination between the groups should reduce and lead to long term
social transformation. This will also help get persons with disability
more visibility, which helps create awareness towards inclusion and
accessibility.
