The Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights is all set to formulate a resource directory regarding children with special needs with the help of Panjab University (PU) students.
This will be a part of the third internship program for students from the Centre for Human Rights and Duties and University Institute of Legal Studies, PU. The program will be conducted from December 22 to January 8 and the theme of the Internship is "Issues being faced by children with special needs in Chandigarh". The program was inaugurated by IRS (retd) Ashwini Luthra, who emphasized the needs for involvement of students to meet and interact with children with special needs. Chairperson of the commission Devi Sirohi stressed upon the need and importance of the internship. Sirohi focused on the benefits of inclusive education for students with special needs and a need for a better public perspective and values so that diversity could be cherished. She pointed that the recommendations which would emerge through the survey being carried out by the students would be sent to the Administration and Department of Disability affairs. The program consisted of various speakers who spoke about different aspects that affect the lives of children with special needs. Advocate Jatinder Kamboj, from SLSA spoke about Persons With Disability (Equal Opportunity, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act 2005: highlighting Major Provisions and role of Stakeholder in the Implementation of the PWD Act. Prabjot Kaur, State Coordinator, State Resource Centre for Women spoke about the Schemes for Persons with Disability in Chandigarh. Dr B S Chavan spoke on Understanding Psychological Aspects Faced by Children with Special Needs. A panel discussion was held on children with special needs from exclusion to Inclusion. The panel included Prof Devi Sirohi (CCPCR chairperson), Neil Roberts (chairperson, Child Welfare Committee), Madanjit Sahota (member, Juvenile Justice Board), Dr Wasim Ahmed (assistant professor, GRID) and Kartar Singh (law officer, CCPCR). At the end of the Internship program a Report consisting of Understanding children with Special Needs and a Resource Directory for Services available for Children with Special Needs in Chandigarh will be published.
