Protecting data by making it illegible
Palo Alto, USA: Xerox Corp said Monday it is designing
software that automatically removes confidential
information from documents. The new technology
responds
to a growing problem protecting sensitive data.
In a large organisation the level of sensitivity
changes depending on the person accessing the
document. The sheer numbers of documents to be tracked
and sorted further complicates the problem, said
Jessica Staddon, manager of the security research area
at the Xeroxs Palo Alto Research Centre.
But the new software offers a solution, using
redaction the ability to control what someone sees.
When users identify a phrase or other data to be
removed, the software called Intelligent Redaction
automatically redacts all references to it in
a document.
Current software encrypts whole documents. Intelligent
redaction understands document context so it can
perform partial encryption.
Only sensitive sections or paragraphs are encrypted,
while the rest of the document is not. The intelligent
redaction software also displays or hides restricted
portions of the document. Thus, the document appears
different to different people.
Information on a loan application, for example, could
be redacted to bar access to information by some bank
employees, while top managers would be able
to get at by using a code.
The protected information also would be automatically
redacted in other documents. The process ensures a
consistent level of security, saves time and increases
redaction accuracy, Xerox said.
The company has not decided when the new technology
will be available, a spokesman said.
