On December 3, at the launch of Accessible India, PM had suggested the
same, prompting PMO and Ministry of Social Justice to begin
consultations.
A debate followed the suggestion, with some activists opposing the
move. "There was a debate on the change in the name and the government
held many rounds of consultations with activists and the states. They
may have reached a consensus and that explains the change in the name
of the department. The word viklang did have a negative connotation
while divyang implies divine," disability rights activist Javed Abidi
told ET .
