World’s most powerful chip

Seoul: South Korea’s Samsung Electronics said Tuesday
it has developed the world’s most powerful memory
chip, which could help create a card capable of
storing 80 DVD movies.

The company said it has developed the world’s first
64-gigabit NAND flash memory product, which it called
“a major leap forward” in flash storage.

The new memory chip is based on finer process
technology using circuit elements that are 30
nanometres wide. A nanometre is one-billionth of a
metre; a
human hair is about 80,000 nanometres across.

Up to 16 of the chips could be combined to make a
128GB memory card that would be also be able to store
32,000 MP3 music files. Samsung said that production
would begin in 2009.

“This has the biggest storage capacity of a single
memory chip ever developed,” said Kwon Hyosun, a
senior manager at Samsung.

Unlike dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips used
for personal computers, NAND memory chips  can retain
and store information even when a device’s
power is turned off.
