Dear all
The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities
[DEPwD] has conceptualized the "Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat
Abhiyan)" as a nationwide flagship campaign for achieving universal
accessibility for persons with disabilities. The campaign was launched by
the Hon'ble Prime Minister on December 3, 2015, on the occasion of the
International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
2. Persons with blindness or low vision have been suffering
from book famine. Latest developments and the digital technology revolution
have a potential of providing a solution to his problem. Persons who cannot
read normal Print, need books in Braille, accessible e-text or audio format.
To produce books in any of these formats, we need the master digital book.
The digital books are also for mainstream printing and for projects such as
e-basta or e-patshala. To work towards achieving an "Accessible Digital
India", a digitally accessible library is being launched by the DEPwD in
collaboration with the DAISY Forum of India which would enable content to be
made available to persons with print disabilities. This library is created
to have accessible digital files of books and access to this library will be
provided only to persons with print disabilities. The Sugamya Pustakalaya is
also going to act as a central repository of digital books for all Braille
presses. Universities, Education Boards, and various other stakeholders will
be able to provide books and content to students in accessible formats
through this portal.
