Picture by Hardeep Singh Ranchi, Aug. 27: Over 400 differently abled persons from across the district got a chance to redress their grievances at a daylong mobile court-cum-awareness camp held at Dikshant Mandap of Ranchi University's Morabadi campus today. Organised by the women, child and social welfare department in collaboration with the office of the state disability commissioner, the mobile court provided the participants, who had come from all the 18 blocks of the district, a platform to voice their problems ranging from reservation in government jobs, non-availability of wheelchairs and disability certificates to absence of ramps in educational institutions and government offices. Earlier during the inaugural session, governor Droupadi Murmu, who was the chief guest, appealed to state disability commissioner Satish Chandra and also officials of the social welfare department to connect disabled persons to the social mainstream. "I am thankful to the officials of the state social welfare department for organising a mobile court in the capital. Such camps should be carried out at block level as well because there are many disabled persons who are unable to reach the state capital," she said. Murmu also gave away disability certificates to four persons. Later, state disability commissioner Satish Chandra gave patient hearing to all the participants and their problems. Deepak Kumar Mahto (21), confined to a wheelchair, demanded a job. "I want to be self-employed but I do not know whom to approach. I am clueless," said Mahto, who came from Angara block. Chandra assured Mahto of helping him get a government job and also apprised him of the three per cent reservation that people with disabilities were entitled to. Another participant, Santosh Kumar (40), whose both legs were affected by polio, requested for an e-rickshaw. "I have a photo studio at Dhurwa but what I earn is not sufficient to run my family. So, I want an e-rickshaw," he said. In reply, Chandra said he would take this matter to the district administration and try to provide him the three-wheeler. "We addressed problems of around 285 persons today. Rest, we will redress later," Chandra said. The camp also had three kiosks for making Aadhaar card, disability certificates and also for testing the IQ of disabled persons. Nikhil Nayar and Neha Sayeed, psychologists ofCentral Institute of Psychiatry in Kanke, tested the IQ of 10 disabled persons while R.K. Verma, eye-specialist of Sadar Hospital, made disability certificates for over 50 disabled persons. As many as 150 persons enrolled their names for Aadhaar. Guest of honour Nidhi Khare, principal secretary personnel, administrative reforms and Rajbhasa department, stressed upon utilisation of CSR funds for empowerment and education of disabled persons. "Providing education and vocational skills to persons with disabilities can bring positive change on their lives. Focus should also be on livelihood generation programmes," she opined.
