‘Disabled are not treated equally’
TNN | Updated: Sep 24, 2016, 02.45 PM IST
Nagpur: "There are three types of prudence — legisprudence, jurisprudence and
demoprudence. Out of these, demoprudence, the people, is the most important
for revising the existing laws, institutions and doctrines. This will help
reconstruct the society in an inclusive and open manner so as to accommodate
Persons With Disability (PWD)," Prof Dr A Lakshminath, vice-chancellor,
Chanakya National Law University
(CNLU), Patna, on Friday. He was addressing the national seminar on 'Social
and Legal Dimensions of Disability Laws and Policies in India' at Vanamati,
Gorepeth.

Guest of honour Dr
Vijender Kumar,
vice-chancellor of
Maharashtra National Law University
(MNLU), highlighted the social issues related to PWD and the role of
'Convention on the
Rights of Persons
with Disabilities' in uplifting the protection towards specially abled
persons. He emphasized on extending the scope and dimension of disability on the
basis of integrated model of law.

Dr SL Deshpande, head, PGTD of Law, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur
University (RTMNU), said, "The world is based on the ablelist epistemology and
the PWD are not treated equally with others. But disability is not inability.
We need to reconstruct the jurisprudence, taking into account the life
experience
of the PWD."

The technical session of the seminar focused on constitutional approach towards
disability. Another session focused on conflicting interests of PWD. In
the last session, there was a panel discussion on 'The Rights of Persons with
