Hi Everyone, I hope this message finds you well. I am wondering what others think about a phenomenon that I have observed quite frequently amongst disabled persons in India and have myself been a participant in. Because one's disability permeates every facet of one's life and constrains many of the choices that one makes, I often find that disabled persons are compelled to be in the company of those who are not as smart or bright as they are. More specifically, since persons with disabilities typically are hesitant to take the risks that are critical for stepping out of one's comfort zone and meeting people who are as intellectually curious and professionally competent as they are, they end up working/studying in a culture of mediocrity.
This not only applies in an educational and professional context, but also in the context of one's spouse/dating partner. The idea that, in a country of blind people, a one-eyed woman is the queen, therefore, means that the disabled person is typically the outlier in terms of performance and ability. My assertions are largely based on anecdotal evidence and my own firsthand experiences, so I may be unfairly generalizing. I would be curious to know what others think about these observations.
