The story pasted in the mail is from The Hindu but the subjectline of the mail is from the Indian Express. I've pasted the URLs of both the dalies. The IE has the better coverage. Its good that the sexual assault faced by blind minors in various hostels are being reported of late. Please also take into account the report I shared from Asianage about assault faced by four blind children in the Panchkuion road school yesterday.
ing two boys aged 13 and 10, both visually impaired and his juniors in the same school. The accused is partially blind. http://indianexpress.com/article/india/boy-sodomised-at-hostel-for-visually-challenged-accused-attempted-similar-acts-earlier-was-let-off-say-delhi-police-4514952/ http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Delhi/Visually-impaired-man-held-for-sodomy/article17265158.ece Incident inside campus Deputy Commisisioner of Police (South East) Romil Baaniya said the incident took place inside the school campus and the police swung into action after the school authorities submitted a complaint to them two days ago. The incident came to the fore when the family members of a 10-year-old victim reached the principal’s office on February 6 and registered a complaint against the accused. In his statement, the victim who suffers from 100% blindness claimed that the accused had ealier sodomised on January 1 as well but had apologised back then. The victim purportedly told the police that he stayed with the accused at the hostel room in the school building and often called him to his room to do some chores. It was allegedly during one of his visits that he was first assaulted. At the time the boy had reported the matter to his uncle who then took it up with the vice principal, S.P. Singh. School silent The school, however, did not report the matter back then and instead called the family members of the accused student who apologised to the victim’s parents and also submitted a written apology. While Mr. Singh's reasoning of not reporting a cognisable offence at the first instance and also not taking any diciplinary action was that exams were round the corner, Mr. Baaniya said there was ommission on the school's part and they will have to face legal action. On February 6, the accused again called the victim to his room and forced himself on him. The victim told the police that the accused student threatened to harm him if he tried to raise an alarm. He did not reveal the matter to his guardian, who also works at the school until the evening the next day. The matter was again taken up with Singh following which he informed the police about the incident. The accused youth was arrested on Wednesday morning. Another child targeted During investigations, it was found that another child, a 13-year-old, was also targeted by the same accused. He is a student of Class VIII in the school where most students come from UP and Haryana. Even that case was reported to the school which let the man off with a warning. “We have registered a case under appropiate sections and have got the victims and accused medically examined after which their statements were recorded,” said Romil Baaniya, DCP, south-east. Investigators said they suspect that the accused youth might have assaulted other children at the school as well which may not have been reported to the principal. -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ To unsubscribe send a message to [email protected] with the subject unsubscribe.
