Tribune News Service Srinagar, November 9 Udaan — a school for differently abled children — was started by the Army in April 2010 at Drugmulla in the frontier district of Kupwara, which has over 39,000 differently abled persons. The basic social infrastructure and an institutionalised mechanism for their rehabilitation and uplift were lacking, said Army in a statement issued here. To ameliorate the suffering of “this section of society who remain neglected and lead a pitiful life”, Udaan School was conceived as a school and rehabilitation centre for these children. The Army says the school endeavours to impart training to the students to help them cope up with their daily activities and further enhance their physical and mental abilities. The Army says the school had added a physiotherapy lab, which houses equipment, Braille machine and audiometer to assist the children with various disabilities. The school also organises the counselling of parents, recreation http://www.tribuneindia.com/news/jammu-kashmir/school-of-hope-for-disabled/495151.html -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU
