Hi
I am wondering what this is all about. Lead content is found in ink and in
ink-print there would be lead content. While in Braille, the printing is done
by embossing. Even the old days printer would use zinc sheet and the computer
printers have metal pins made of steel to emboss.

I am baffled! Would someone fill me in?
Harish.

Subject: [AI] Case to ponder: kolkata HC takes on: "Lead braille affecting
kids, PIL tells court"

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata/lead-braille-affecting-kids-pil-tells-court/articleshow/61599469.cms
KOLKATA: A visually impaired advocate has urged Calcutta high court to give an
order to replace all lead-made braille prints with plastic ones. In her PIL,
she attached a survey that shows blind student using braille scripts with high
lead content are increasingly complaining of sleeplessness, lack of apetite,
gastric ailments and loss of memory...Petitioner Snigdha Acharya, the daughter
of retired high court judge Shankar Acharya, is now studying for her
post-graduate diploma on public health care and medicine law at the National
University of Juridical Sciences...A report by the National Test House shows
braille scripts have 98.11% lead content. This is a major health hazard for the
visually impaired, the PIL states, adding, "The Centre and states are negligent
about lead's harmful effect on blind students."..Snigdha's counsel Srikanta
Dutta argued, "The state is distributing braille devices, which have high lead
content, sent by central agencies without taking any precaution. The Centre
should use plastic to make braille devices."..After the PIL was moved, the
division bench of Acting Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya and Justice
Arijit Banerjee fixed the hearing for 2pm. But no one turned up to represent
the Centre. The court then adjourned the hearing till November
17 and declared that if no one appears on behalf of the Centre during the next
hearing, the court will proceed with the case any way..
