SWR general manager A.K. Gupta. Speaking to presspersons here on
Tuesday, Mr. Gupta said that the total outlay for 2018-19 for SWR
stands at Rs. 3,300 crore against Rs. 835 crore of last fiscal. It is
a monumental Budget in the sense that most of the proposals for
infrastructure development works including doubling of the railway
tracks, electrification works, and construction of two terminals have
been approved besides the suburban train for Bengaluru, he said.
The government has approved Rs. 840 crore proposal to carry on the
doubling works of 212.54 kms long railway lines including that of 48
kms from Baiyyappannahalli to Hosur (Rs. 375.67 crore), 21.7 kms from
Yeshwanthpur to Channasandra (Rs. 169.65 crore) and 41.5 kms from
Pennukonda to Dharmavaram excl (Rs. 249.67 crore).
Similarly, Rs. 919.44 crore proposals for electrification works of 989
kms of railway lines too has been approved.
Under this project the SWR will take up the electrification works of
various railway lines including Hospet-Swamihalli (59 kms, Rs. 61.81
crore), Birur-Talguppa (161 km, Rs. 151.99 crore),
Mysuru-Hassan-Mangaluru inclusive of Arsikere-Hassan (61 km, Rs. 56.71
crore), Kadaur-Chikmaglur (46 kms, Rs. 39.74 crore),
Chikbanavar-Hassan (166 km, Rs. 155.17 crore) and Bangarpet-Yelehanka

Besides, SWR will take up the construction of two new railway
terminals one each at Naganahalli near Mysuru at the cost of Rs. 750
crore and Chandragoa near Madgaon at the cost of Rs. 134 crore. Along
with the electrification of major routes, the SWR will also take up
the electrification of several minor stretches, he added.
About the achievements of railways in Karnataka, Mr. Gupta said that
252 km of new railway lines including the long the pending works of
connecting Bengaluru with Hassan via Shravanabelagola and Gulbarga to
Bidar have been completed. Similarly, doubling of 277 kms of railway
lines and electrification of 665 kms have been completed so far. All
important lines in Karnataka are being doubled or electrified
including Bengaluru-Mumbai, Bengaluru-Hyderabad routes.
The SWR will launch a vigourous awareness campaign on the use of
bio-toilets. Models of bio-toilets will be installed at the platforms
to sensitise the passengers on using bio-toilets, he said.
To a query, Mr. Gupta said the electrification works between Bengaluru
and Mysuru has been completed. Other procedures like training for the
staff and trail run too has been done. This line would be put to use
by the end of February. To another query, Mr. Gupta said that it will
take time to introduce the passenger train between Hospet and Kottur
for want of man power.
This line has several level crossings and man power is required to run
the passenger trains. SWR is likely to get more map power in 2018, he
said.
