visually impaired pupils traumatised in government hostel TNN | Oct 18,
2018, 09.20 AM IST Printed from NASHIK: Forty visually impaired students
residing in a government-managed hostel in Nashik city have accused the
facility's caretaker, Sandeep Kamble, of inhuman treatment to them. The
traumatised students claimed that Kamble often remained drunk and has been
severely beating them up on flimsy grounds ever since he took over as
caretaker about a year ago. The std I-X students, who hail from the rural
parts of districts like Jalgaon, Nashik, Hingoli, Aurangabad, are pursuing
their studies in blind schools across the city. Nashik Zilla Parishad CEO
Naresh Gite admitted that he has received feedback on the ordeal of the
students. "We are in the process of sending a report to the state social
justice department. We strongly recommend the termination of services of
the caretaker." The authorities have not yet lodged a police complaint
against Kamble, who has gone on leave from Monday. The hostel is under the
control of the disability commissionerate of the social justice department
and the ZP is the nodal office for its smooth functioning. The matter came
to light when one of the aggrieved students called up his parents and
narrated the woes after he, along with three other students, were allegedly
thrashed by Kamble on Saturday night. Hostel superintendent M M Vazat
admitted that Kamble mercilessly beat up the four students on Saturday
night. "Four of the students who suffered minor bruises due to the
thrashing by the hostel caretaker were taken to the Nashik civil hospital,
where they were treated and discharged," she said. Wazat said that Kamble
would not be allowed to resume duty until further orders from the
superiors. The students alleged that Kamble beat them up regularly. The
parents of one of the boys who was thrashed by Kamble got in touch with the
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leaders, who subsequently took up the issue with
the authorities concerned. A student recalled how Kamble kicked them from
behind while they were urinating in the hostel toilet. "The caretaker often
visited our rooms in an inebriated condition and directed us to touch his
feet. As we bent, he climbed on our back and refused to get down. Our backs
would pain," said some students. Another student said that Kamble threw
cricket bats on the students and threatened them with dire consequences.
"We had brought Kamble's misdeeds to the notice of other officials in the
hostel, but our complaints were ignored," said the students.
