Smartcane is a mobility device which enhances the capabilities of a
normal cane. It fits on the top fold of the cane and detects obstacles
from knee to head height up to three meters. The device uses the
ultrasonic rays and alerts the users about the obstacles through
different vibration patterns. As one gets closer to an obstacle, the
vibrations intensify. The device has two modes for navigation which are
out door and indoor. In the latter, the detection happens up to two
meters. The device provides feedback using total four different
vibration patterns when used in outdoor mode and three in indoor mode.
The device uses chargeable battery which can run up to a week with the
normal usage of three-four hours a day.
