Against the backdrop of teacher agitations for government aid and demands for implementation of labour laws, a teacher from Beed has listed 30 categories of teachers that official dom has created, throwing light on the quagmire of issues ailing the teaching community. Brijmohan Dhirajprasad Mishra, a Hindi teacher from a private unaided school who tried to decipher the bureaucratic language, said, “Since I have been taking up cudgels against corruption in educational institutes and teacher recruitment, I would often come across different types of problems. I decided to do a reality check of exactly how many categories of teachers there are in Maharashtra. I could list around 30. While I have not studied the education system elsewhere, the sheer number of categories is astounding,” Mishra told Mirror. He said over the years, teachers’ problems have multiplied. “Each time there is an issue, the government creates new rules for teachers. For example, teachers led a long agitation and earned pension rights, but on November 1, 2005, the state government took those rights away. We had to move the court, which held that the pension law should be changed before the government takes a new decision. Teachers are crushed between government’s rules and high-handedness of institutions, which do not pay fullsalary to teachers. At times, institutions take loans in teachers’ names.,” Mishra said.
