Central Railway busts fake disability certificates racket for tickets - Times of India
May 11, 2019, 08.53 AM IST Printed from MUMBAI: Central Railway has busted a scam in which able-bodied passengers were procuring disability certificates to corner tickets on long distance trains. WR's vigilance department last week unearthed a scam in which touts were cornering tickets meant for cancer patients, for which a quota is earmarked. As per rules, completely blind or orthopaedically handicapped persons are eligible for a 50% concession in AC 2-tier and AC first class. They are entitled to get 75% off in other classes. The escort is given the same concession. Two berths have been earmarked in all trains on non-suburban sections for handicapped persons. The person accompanying the handicapped person is allotted a berth out of this quota. A CR official said, "Ulhanagar resident Ramesh Ahuja (64) had booked a ticket from the Kalyan passenger reservation system on March 8 for the Jaipur-Pune Superfast Express for travel between Kota-Kalyan. He and his companion were issued berths 68 and 69 in S3 coach for April 6. When the train arrived at Vasai, the train ticket examiner asked for the ticket and disability certificate. A senior CR official said, "TTEs are experienced and can easily make out if the disability certificate is fake. Both passengers were nabbed when they could not give a convincing reply. Similarly, on Chennai Express, the TTE found Sunil Gehani (34) travelling on a fake certificate with his companion. Gehani had booked tickets for AC class for three other long-distance trains. The official said the TTE nabbed Gehani and his companion on April 24. In both instances, CR registered FIRs with railway police under section 420 of IPC for cheating the government by procuring a bogus certificate. A source said all accused are residents of Ulhasnagar.
