Listening to news is a good idea. I would also suggest listening to sports
commentary carefully. Just remember to to notice every word and follow its
meaning.
As regards books, I would suggest any novel by Jane Austen. Though she wrote
more two centuries earlier, her language seems to me the simplest of all.
For short stories I would recommend Oscar Wilde. Among the Indian books,
read Slumdog Millionaire by Vikas Swarup. I have read the novel. It uses
every type of languate used in the shops, market places, offices, parties
and in the tv shows. You will also learn many slang and abusive languages as
well that may come handy some day.
