NGO wants online coaching for differently abled students
Mumbai Mirror - 12-08-2020

The Bombay High Court has issued a notice to the state over a public
interest litigation (PIL) demanding that the educational needs of
differently-abled students be addressed. Filed by Anamprem, an
Ahmednagar-based NGO, the PIL wants the state to provide internet facility
with wifi connections in selected locations in rural areas for online
coaching of these students.

The petition, filed through advocate Uday Warunjikar, states that
differently-abled students have not been considered while issuing the
unlocking orders. The NGO, which is involved in providing hostel facility
to blind, deaf and dumb children, claims that the state education
department ignored their representations.

The petition states, “There is no scheme introduced by the respondent (the
state education department) to look at the problems about the connectivity
and technology-related and infrastructural issues, as far as the persons
with benchmark disabilities are concerned.”

The petition also states that directions for online classes don’t include
sign language. It has suggested using government-owned channels like
Doordarshan which has a wide presence and is free of charge.

It also states that most students with disabilities prefer staying in
hostels as they find commuting difficult. In the absence of hostels,
alternate arrangements should have been made, it says.
