Hello, Greetings of the day from the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA <https://www.niua.org/>). We are writing to you on a really important topic; disability and inclusion in the space standards in India. As you are aware NIUA through it's *Building Accessible Safe Inclusive Indian Cities (BASIIC <https://www.niua.org/projectdetails?pid=26>) *programme has been tirelessly working on mainstreaming the dialogue on disability inclusion in the urban realm. It is in this context, we have formalized a strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. A key agenda in this partnership is to *refine the **guidelines and standards pertaining to universal access and inclusive design in India.* This is especially relevant in light of the Rights to Persons with Disability Act of 2016 completing five years, which specifies “Harmonised Guidelines” to be followed in order to ensure a barrier free built environment. The act also recommends periodic revision of the guidelines to incorporate latest technology and upcoming needs of the persons with disabilities. We are proposing this to be taken a step further, promote principles of universal design in order to accommodate needs of ‘ALL’ types of disabilities, elderly, women and children, essentially covering the entire gamut of vulnerable demographics in India. This correspondence intends to seek your participation as a key stakeholder, along with members from academia, functionaries, civil society, private sector, citizenry, and most importantly persons with disabilities, to* gather relevant information on special areas of concern, contextual/regional information, observations/ suggestions in existing documents, and capture successful examples within India. *We have put together a perception survey to capture this information. Below is the link to the survey form. *Click here to fill out the Perception Survey <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc7RNMjR0xJVTLiqH_n4g_22oY68uXS9aQ0qrqpoaI3dFPUwg/viewform> * Due to paucity of time available for the activity, *we urge you to share your opinions on or before 10th February, 2021. *We also urge you to share this with your friends, colleagues, and partners. Look forward to your response and support in making this endeavour impactful. *For any queries or concerns, please feel free to write back to us on the same email id.* -- Regards, Team BASIIC For more information on the project, please visit us at *The BASIIC project* <https://www.niua.org/projectdetails?pid=26> -- Disclaimer: 1.
