[EMAIL PROTECTED] project to upgrade infrastructure in schools

Staff Reporter

To impart IT-enabled education to students

Broadband Internet connection in high schools in the district from next
academic year

Trial run on to introduce IT-enabled education in government upper primary
schools

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The [EMAIL PROTECTED], project under the Directorate of
Public Instruction, has decided to upgrade the existing infrastructure in
government
high schools to impart Information Technology (IT)-enabled education to
students.

The facility will enable the students to learn subjects other than IT with the
assistance of technology.

K. Anwar Sadath, executive director of [EMAIL PROTECTED] announced this during
a workshop organised to discuss the activities proposed to be carried out in
schools
using Centrally funds to the tune of Rs.50.8 crore.

Steps to ensure broadband Internet connection in all high schools in
Thiruvananthapuram district from the next academic year are currently under
way. As
part of this, each high school will have a separate web site, chronicling the
history, activity and educational facilities at the school.

Mr. Sadath said a trial run to introduce IT-enabled education in government
upper primary schools is currently on in schools at Attingal, Chala and
Poovachal.

Local cable TV operators have agreed to beam VICTERS, the education channel for
students, through their networks across the State.

As per the understanding, nearly 70 per cent of the cable operators will air
the channel after school hours. More programmes focussing on the educational
requirements of the students will be beamed through the channel.

The channel will also start airing documentaries and news programmes developed
by students from June, Mr. Sadath said.

The tie up of EDUSAT with local cable TV networks will also enable repeat
transmission of educational material direct to homes.

The workshop was attended by teachers, IT coordinators and [EMAIL PROTECTED]
master trainers from 121 high schools in various parts of the district. It was
presided
over by Vijayakumari, district educational officer.

The [EMAIL PROTECTED] project, launched nearly four years ago, is being
implemented in 2,738 high schools in the State, including in Mahe in Puducherry
and Lakshadweep,
and the Gulf.
