West Bengal relief for disabled job-seekers
KOLKATA: The Bengal government on Monday decided to offer special
relaxations to persons with disabilities so that they can be recruited
in the post of lower division assistant or LDC. Finance secretary
Manoj Pant issued the directive in which the government, while
recruiting LDCs from the categories of persons with disabilities will
exempt them from appearing in the typing test on computer. The finance
department order said that those with disabilities, like locomotor
disability, including cerebral palsy, and cured leprosy patients and
dwarfism, will get the benefit. Acid victims, those suffering from
muscular dystrophy, autism and specific learning disability along with
mental illness and multiple disabilities, too, are eligible.
The order said that people with disabilities would be exempted if they
could produce a certificate of the medical board, saying they were
unable to type. “However, without a certificate, they will be allowed
to type at a reduced speed of 12 words per minute (wpm) in English,”
the order said. For the visually impaired, the typing test will be
held on Braille keyboard, with a speed of 12 wpm. However, in case of
speech enabled keyboard, the speed will be 20 wpm. For those with
speech and hearing disability, the speed will be 20 wpm for English
and 10 wpm for Bengali,” it said.Arup Das Mahapatra, secretary, Indian
Speech and Hearing Association, West Bengal chapter said, “This will
be a big support for those who are challenged with speech and hearing,
as this will ensure economic freedom for them once they are employed.”
