West Bengal relief for disabled job-seekers KOLKATA: The Bengal government on Monday decided to offer special relaxations to persons with disabilities so that they can be recruited in the post of lower division assistant or LDC. Finance secretary Manoj Pant issued the directive in which the government, while recruiting LDCs from the categories of persons with disabilities will exempt them from appearing in the typing test on computer.The finance department order said that those with disabilities, like locomotor disability, including cerebral palsy, and cured leprosy patients and dwarfism, will get the benefit. Acid victims, those suffering from muscular dystrophy, autism and specific learning disability along with mental illness and multiple disabilities, too, are eligible. The order said that people with disabilities would be exempted if they could produce a certificate of the medical board, saying they were unable to type. “However, without a certificate, they will be allowed to type at a reduced speed of 12 words per minute (wpm) in English,” the order said. For the visually impaired, the typing test will be held on Braille keyboard, with a speed of 12 wpm. However, in case of speech enabled keyboard, the speed will be 20 wpm. For those with speech and hearing disability, the speed will be 20 wpm for English and 10 wpm for Bengali,” it said.Arup Das Mahapatra, secretary, Indian Speech and Hearing Association, West Bengal chapter said, “This will be a big support for those who are challenged with speech and hearing, as this will ensure economic freedom for them once they are employed.”
