NEW DELHI: The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has sent a notice to the transport department over the complaint of a woman who has intellectual disability, cerebral palsy and restricted mobility. The woman is awaiting the department’s nod to buy a Tata Winger and get a manual/hydraulic ramp fitted in it to improve its accessibility. She told DCW the vehicle is spacious enough to accommodate her motorised wheelchair and that there is no other option available in the market for her specific requirement. According to the woman, the car dealer refused to sell her the vehicle, stating it could be sold only for commercial use. She has sought approval for purchasing it for her personal use and modifying it into a disabled-friendly vehicle by installing a hydraulic lift and other allied features. The panel has sought an action taken report from the department by October 26. The woman has informed the commission that in a ‘meeting of stakeholders to make Delhi a model accessible city’ held on December 19, 2018, a representative of the ministry of road transport and highways had stated that in case a person with disability wants to seek permission from the ministry and other concerned government agencies for purchasing a diesel/modified vehicle (as per requirement) with private registration number for personal use in Delhi, it can be supported on individual basis. DCW chief Swati Maliwal said, “Even in the 21st century, persons with disabilities face several problems.
