The JAWS Dictionary Manager is useful for pronouncing words or phrases that a speech synthesizer may not pronounce correctly. In addition, rules can be created which take a phrase and announce it as an initialism. Conversely, rules can be created which take an initialism and announce it as a word or phrase. That is, a rule can be created where the initials of USA will be announced as United States of America and vice versa where the phrase United States of America will be announced as USA. There are two keystrokes you can use to open the Dictionary Manager: A. INSERT+F2 opens the list of JAWS managers. The Dictionary Manager is one of the items in this list. B. Alternatively, you can bypass the list of managers and open the Dictionary Manager immediately at any time by pressing INSERT+D. 1. Open a blank Word document. 2. Press INSERT+D to open the JAWS Dictionary Manager.
3. Focus will be on the Add button, press SPACE to open this option. 4. Type in the word or abbreviation in the Actual Word edit box you want to create a rule for. 5. TAB to the Replacement Word edit box, type in the word or abbreviation you want to replace the actual word or Abbreviation with. 6. Press ENTER and then press ALT+F4 to close.
