Final Report: Compatibility Issue Between Android Accessibility Suite and
Gboard

Requested Feature or Behavior (WHAT):

- Reintroduce the previous cursor navigation method used in Gboard.

- Make swipe-to-type an optional feature in Gboard, allowing users to
enable or disable it.

Customer's Issue (WHY):

- The current cursor navigation in Gboard, when used with TalkBack, makes
it challenging to move the cursor to specific buttons such as "send,"
"submit," or "done" while typing with the swipe-to-type feature.

- Voice typing in Gboard produces double beeps upon pressing the voice
input button, which is disruptive.

FR for Which Apps/Products (WHERE):

- This request pertains to the Android Accessibility Suite (TalkBack) and
the Gboard app.

Why This Feature is Requested (WHY):

- The proposed changes are intended to enhance compatibility and the user
experience between TalkBack and Gboard for users with visual impairments
who depend on swipe-to-type for faster input.

Why This Feature is Important (WHY):

- The current cursor navigation issue impedes efficient typing and button
selection, affecting usability.

- The double beep from voice typing is superfluous and interrupts the user
experience.

Real-Time Scenario or Accessibility Use Case (WHAT):

- A user with visual impairments is composing a message using swipe-to-type
with TalkBack enabled. They need to move the cursor to the "send" button,
but the current cursor navigation complicates precise movement, disrupting
the typing flow. This is because the cursor moves within the characters
regardless of whether they swipe right or left.

Additional Notes:

- These issues have been present since the introduction of TalkBack version
9 and the swipe-to-type functionality in Gboard.

- The issues have been reported since 2019 and persist across various
Android devices from different manufacturers running Android versions 8 to
14. Therefore, I request that Google address these bugs directly, rather
than attributing them to other manufacturers.

Thanks and regards,
Yatin Panchal
