In recent jaws versions you may follow these steps: Press insert+spacebar for the laywered keystroke. Then press v for volume. Now press j for jaws. Now you can use arrow keys or page up / page down key to increase or decrease sound. When satisfied, press enter. Focus will come back to where you left off.
This will change jaws sound only. If you want to change system sound, press s instead of j.
