Hi Access Indians,

WhatsApp is a common messaging app in use these days. It were fully accessible
till the release prior to version 2.24.19.86 released 25th September 2024. I
have received this version on my Android device on Thursday, 26th September
2024 and since then the Message edit box is being announced as Compose Message
edit box while in editing mode. The issue here is that the Talkback menu option
for Action does not appear in the context menu accessed using Up/Down or
Down/Up swipes. The Action menu is convenient as it provides options for text
selection, cut/copy and paste.

Even if you enter the text selection mode using the gesture ‘Double tap with 2
fingers and hold’, it does not select or unselect text and instead keeps
speaking ‘selection cleared’. Only the paste function using the gesture ‘triple
tap with 3 fingers’ works correctly.

This has made it very difficult to type/edit messages in WhatsApp. I have sent
an email to WhatsApp Support and urge you guys to do so. It will help in
reaching out to them in large numbers and they will be able to understand the
intensity of the issue. Here’s the detail for sending out the email.

Note that you need to enter your mobile number along with country code as it is
asked for by them if not sent in the first communication. I have mentioned +91
for India, you may change it as per your country code and append your mobile
number to it.

Subject: WhatsApp Message Edit Box Has Become Inaccessible For Talkback Users

Email Body:

Hi,

Talkback is an accessibility software on Android devices that provides spoken
feedback for visually challenged users to operate their devices.

The WhatsApp app was fully accessible using Talkback however, with the recent
release i.e., version 2.24.19.86, the 'Message' edit box is announced as a
'Compose Message' edit box and is not accessible while typing/editing messages.
The issue with it is that Talkback is unable to identify it as an edit box now
and hence does not provide the editing actions like text selection, copy/cut
and paste.

Due to this, messaging on the app, which was fully supported prior to the
release of the mentioned version, has suddenly become inaccessible and very
difficult.

As a point of reference, take note that the Search box is still functioning
correctly.

Kindly take note of the difficulty faced by me and many other visually
challenged users on the app and fix the issue with the 'Compose Message' edit
box at the earliest.

My mobile number is +91

---end---

Best Regards,

Zujar…

It’s tough as long as not attempted 😊
