Hi there,

IELTS in India is conducted by IDP, and they provide a fairly detailed set
of access arrangements to support candidates with different disabilities.
You can find information on their official website at the link below:

Having taken the IELTS myself, I found the journey quite confusing at many
stages. However, it was reassuring to know that a system for access needs
does exist. I recall trying out the IELTS prep app by IDP, but
unfortunately found it quite inaccessible. What helped me most was finding
a coach who was willing to adapt to my learning requirements as a visually
impaired test taker. With that support, I was able to achieve a band score
of 7.5, which is considered strong and generally sufficient for admission
into top universities.

I’m sharing the process I followed below, in case it helps other aspirants:

1. Decide the type of test you need to take (Academic/General/UKVI).

2. Contact IDP through their helpline at 1800-102-4544 or by email at
[email protected].

3. In your communication, clearly mention:

o Your disability and the specific support you require.

o The test type you have chosen.

o Your passport details.

o Supporting documents such as your disability certificate, and an offer
letter from a university or employer (depending on your purpose for taking
the test).

o Your intended test centre.

4. They will verify the documents and may request further details if
needed.

5. After review, they will let you know the support they can arrange at
your test centre.

6. It’s important to keep the dialogue open until you and IDP reach a
clear agreement on the accommodations. For example, in my case, they
initially suggested Braille test papers, but since I am not a native
Braille user, I explained this and they eventually arranged a scribe and
extra time, which worked well.

7. Once accommodations are finalised, you can book your test. IDP
usually requires at least six weeks to make these arrangements, so timing
is key.

I hope this gives a clearer picture of the process. I’d be happy to walk
anyone through the steps one-on-one if that would help—please feel free to
reach out to me directly by email or on WhatsApp (I’m not available for
direct calls as I’m currently based abroad).

At Shantha Chandra Family Foundation, we are also working on creating an
inclusive learning programme for IELTS preparation, which we plan to launch
soon. In the meantime, we’re happy to support individual requests for
guidance through the process.

All the very best!

Warm regards,

Siva
