Dear ACCES INDIA Family,

Travel becomes truly meaningful when every journey is possible with
dignity, safety, and independence.

With this spirit, we warmly invite you to join our special group discussion
on Accessible Travel for Persons with Visual Impairment.

Dates: 28 February and 1 March.

Travel is not only about reaching a destination. It is about freedom,
confidence, and equal opportunity. It is about being able to move through
the world with dignity. But how accessible is travel across India today?
And what more can be done to make journeys smoother and safer for all of us?

To begin the conversation, let us reflect on some practical observations
that many visually impaired travelers have noted.

It has been observed that when a person with visual impairment travels by
train, a reserved seat in an AC coach often provides a greater sense of
comfort and accessibility. Lower berths, especially seat numbers such as 1
or 4, are considered more convenient because of their location and ease of
access.

On trains like the Shatabdi Express, seats near the door, commonly seat
number 1 or 3, are often allotted to visually impaired passengers. Such
arrangements significantly enhance convenience and independent movement.

Air travel is generally experienced as safer and more organized, with
structured assistance services available at airports. However, this
convenience comes at a higher cost, which may not always be affordable for
everyone.

Road travel, on the other hand, is frequently described as the most
challenging. Locating the correct bus, identifying the right bus stand, and
safely crossing busy roads can create anxiety and uncertainty. These
situations often demand extra caution and planning.

Technology has become an important support system. Smart devices such as
Meta glasses, iPhones, and Android phones play a valuable role in
navigation and accessing information. Applications like Be My Eyes,
Lookout, and Seeing AI assist in reading text and understanding
surroundings in real time.

Carrying a white cane during travel not only supports mobility but also
helps others recognize the traveler as visually impaired, often encouraging
timely assistance.

It is also important to acknowledge that challenges may increase when two
totally blind individuals travel together without any sighted support. This
raises an important question for all of us. Can totally blind persons
travel safely and independently in India? What strategies and precautions
can make this possible?

During our discussion, we will explore:

Accessible regions across India. Which states and cities are more
travel-friendly? Which regions still face significant barriers?

Planning essentials. What should be checked in advance regarding
transportation, accommodation, restrooms, and tourist attractions?

Support systems. Are trained staff available? Are ramps, elevators, tactile
paths, audio assistance, and clear signage properly implemented?

Religious and picnic spots. Which states offer accessible religious sites,
and what specific facilities are required there?

Transit accessibility. What ensures smooth sightseeing when traveling by
bus, train, or air?

We will also highlight specialized organizations in India such as Planet
Abled, Able Journeys, and Special Holidays, which provide accessible tours
and services designed specifically for blind and visually impaired
travelers.

While travel in highly developed countries may often feel more convenient
due to advanced infrastructure, our focus will be on understanding the
realities within India and identifying practical steps toward meaningful
improvement.

Most importantly, this discussion belongs to all of you. If you have
traveled anywhere in India, please share your experiences. What made your
journey easier? What obstacles did you face? What suggestions can guide
others?

Let us come together, exchange insights, and strengthen our collective
voice. Every shared experience brings us closer to a future where travel is
not a struggle, but a confident and joyful experience.

We truly look forward to your active participation.

Warm regards,
