A couple of us visually impaired guys are planning our first proper leisure trip on our own. Both of us have travelled quite a bit, but usually with sighted friends, or independently for specific purposes, like going to colleges, friends’ homes, work, etc. What we haven’t really done is travel independently just for the sake of travelling. So, we’d love to hear from other visually impaired travellers about your experiences, especially when it comes to picking destinations, safety, planning, getting around, and just figuring things out as two completely blind travellers. I know there’s no place in India that can simply be labelled “accessible”, and that’s not really what we’re looking for either. But based on your experiences, are there places you’ve found easier, safer, or simply more enjoyable to travel to as a visually impaired person? Any destinations you’d strongly recommend? Airbnbs or stays that worked particularly well? Local transport options that were surprisingly easy to navigate? Or just any lessons you learnt the hard way that you think we should know before heading out? Local transport is probably our biggest question mark. Almost every travel blog seems to assume that you’ll rent a car, bike, scooter, etc., which obviously isn’t an option for us. So I’d especially love to hear about places where public transport, cabs, autos, or other local options worked well. Basically, two blind guys are trying to escape the relentless hustle and bustle of everyday life and go somewhere, and we’d love some wisdom from people who’ve done this before. 😄 Would really appreciate any suggestions, experiences, warnings, hacks, or random pieces of advice you’re willing to throw our way.
