At GoldenShine, we have had several visually impaired students successfully complete Trinity College London grades across different disciplines. For totally blind students, we have generally found the Memory Test to be the most practical alternative to conventional staff-notation sight reading. Our approach places a strong emphasis on aural training. Students are trained to listen carefully, understand and internalise the music, and reproduce it accurately through memory and practice. During the examination, they perform what they have learnt and memorised through this process. This approach has worked very successfully for many of our students. It is important to note that this is primarily an approach we use for examination purposes. In regular teaching, blind students can certainly learn Western Classical music through verbal explanation, oral description of notation, aural training, and memorisation. With an accessible teaching methodology, the inability to visually read staff notation does not have to be a barrier to learning Western Classical music.
