*Hello everyone* Do you find some websites difficult to read because of low contrast, confusing colours, or hard-to-see text? If you use NVDA with Chrome, the High Contrast extension can help make webpages more visually comfortable. *How to Add High Contrast to Chrome Using NVDA* * Start NVDA and make sure it is running. * Open Google Chrome. * Press Alt + F to open the Chrome menu. * Use Down Arrow to locate Extensions and press Enter. * Select Visit Chrome Web Store and press Enter. * Search for High Contrast. * Use H to move through headings or K to move through links. * Locate the High Contrast extension and press Enter to open its page. * Press B to move through buttons until NVDA announces “Add to Chrome.” * Press Enter on Add to Chrome. * A confirmation dialog will appear. Use Tab to locate Add extension. * Press Enter to confirm the installation. *How to Open the Chrome Extensions Menu Using NVDA* Once the extension is installed: * Press Alt + Shift + T to move focus to the Chrome toolbar. * Use Tab or Shift + Tab to move through the toolbar controls. * Listen for NVDA to announce “Extensions.” * Press Enter or Spacebar to open the Extensions menu. * Use Down Arrow to locate High Contrast. * Press Enter to open the extension. * If available, choose Pin to keep High Contrast easily accessible on the Chrome toolbar. *Quick Shortcut* Alt + Shift + T → Tab → Extensions → Enter *High Contrast Extension* Open High Contrast in Chrome Web Store *How to Use High Contrast on Websites* * Open the website you want to browse. * Use the keyboard to move to the High Contrast extension in the Chrome toolbar. * Press Enter to open it. * Select the contrast option that is most comfortable for your vision. * Return to the webpage and check the text, links, buttons, and other visual elements. * Try different options until you find the setting that works best for you. * You can also customize the setting for a particular website where supported. *Shortcut: Shift + F11* For faster access, you can assign Shift + F11 as the keyboard shortcut for the High Contrast extension. To set it: *Chrome → Extensions → Manage Extensions → Keyboard shortcuts → High Contrast → Assign Shift + F11* Alternatively, open Chrome's extension-shortcut page by entering: *chrome://extensions/shortcuts* *Important:* Shift + F11 is not *automatically the default shortcut* for the High Contrast extension. The shortcut needs to be checked or assigned in Chrome's extension shortcut settings. *NVDA + High Contrast* For NVDA users, the extension works alongside the screen reader: * Tab / Shift + Tab – Move between interactive controls. * H – Move between headings. * K – Move between links. * B – Move between buttons. * E – Move to edit fields. * Enter – Activate a selected control. * NVDA + Spacebar – Switch between Browse Mode and Focus Mode when required. *Remember* High Contrast improves the visual appearance of a webpage, while NVDA provides screen-reader access to its content.
