Just when we thought the internet was safely overflowing with brilliant content creators already teaching us how to navigate WhatsApp with a screen reader, a prestigious college just had to volunteer to do it too. Honestly, the sheer disrespect! How dare an institution step in when members of our own community have already put up such wonderful tutorials? Of course, why would anyone talk about the real elephant in the room: the screen reader isn't the problem here, the inaccessible application is! Besides, requiring us to fill out a Google form with our contact details just to learn how to open a desktop app feels less like ground-breaking inclusion and more like collecting participant metrics for an annual report. If an institution like St. Xavier's and the XRCVC genuinely wanted to push the envelope in the DEI space, they could actually leverage their institutional weight to lobby tech giants like Meta to make WhatsApp natively accessible out of the box, or partner with corporate HR to break down real hiring barriers—instead of running basic tech tutorials behind data-collection sign-up forms.
