NEW DELHI: There's some good news for visually challenged students. DU is
planning to come out with centralised pre-admission forms in Braille from
Tuesday.

Says Seema Parihar, deputy dean, Students' Welfare, and a teacher at Kirori Mal
College, "Until now, visually impaired students were helped by counsellors.
However, many had wished to know what they were filling out. So this year, we
decided to bring out the form in Braille."

Adds Parihar, "It's a small thing, but the idea is to make students feel
informed. The form in Braille will give them a chance to make an informed
decision and be a step towards becoming a greater part of the admission
process."

Typically, around 350-400 students get registered and take admission every
year, a number that DU authorities hope will go up in the coming years.

Incidentally, students with disabilities are provided separate counselling at
the dean of Students' Welfare office.

They also get admission in the college of their choice through the DSW's
office. While there are clear favourites amongst colleges, most students want
to opt for the usual choices given by other students, with Hindu topping the
list, says Parihar wryly.

"Now though, students can get an idea of which college has the required
infrastructure from the access audit report that DU has put up on its website.
This report is very recent and was submitted some months ago," adds the
teacher.
The university has also made other arrangements to make the admission process
easier this year.

Says deputy dean of Students' Welfare Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, "Around 18 student
volunteers will be there to help the physically challenged aspirants. While 15
are girls doing B El Ed in LSR, there are three students, who also helped out
last year and are from Khalsa college." Of these 18 volunteers, four have been
designated to accompany aspirant for medical examinations to the university
health centre.
