What is a Blade Server?
Blade Servers are rack mountable high density servers (n servers/1Unit) that
are self contained which pack more processing power into a small space. Each
blade is individual server.
Blade server comprise of a custom chassis and multiple processing modules with
low power consumption, less cabling between blade server with more computing
power into a smaller space. They are ideal for specific purposes such as web
hosting and cluster computing.
Advantages over Conventional Servers:
• Reduced Space Requirements: More servers are housed in a single cabinet, less
cabling helps provides 35 to 45 percent improvement compared to conventional
servers.
• Reduced Power Consumption: Consolidating power supplies into the blade
chassis reduces number of separate power supplies needed and reduces the power
requirements per server. These systems can use up to 54% less energy than
conventional servers.
• Lower Management Cost: Server consolidation and resource centralization
simplifies server deployment, management and administration and improves
management control.
• Simplified Cabling: The blade server chassis greatly simplifies the cabling
process by aggregating cabling of multiple servers at once. Up to 70% of
cabling required for multiple servers can be reduced by blade servers in a
single chassis. Because blade servers have internal, high speed communication
channels between the individual blades, they dispense with network cards and
cables for each server, and shared power supplies cut the number of electrical
cords. For example consolidates the cables for up to 24 four-way servers into
as few as four cables.
• Future Proofing Through Modularity: Because of the modularity of blade
servers future generations of blade server deployment is easy.
• Easier Physical Deployment: Once a blade server chassis has been installed,
adding additional servers is merely a matter of sliding in additional blades
into the chassis.
