CM announces Rs. 5 lakh each compensation for cataract

victims

Chennai (PTI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Monday announced a
compensation of Rs 5 lakhs to each of the 20 people who complained of blurred
vision after undergoing cataract surgery during an eye camp at Perambalur.

A monthly pension of Rs 400 would also be alloted to the victims who are
currently undergoing treatment, Karunanidhi said in a statement, adding the
government
would conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter.

The camp was conducted by a private Joseph Institute of Ophthalmology on July
28 and the patients were allegedly administered "contaminated" eye drops during
a cataract operation then.

Six of them were yesterday declared fully blind by doctors.

Karunanidhi said he had deputed Health Minister M R K Paneerselvam to visit the
victims undergoing treatment at the hospital in Tiruchirapalli, the release
said.
