Hello, You can do this by downloading the Gmail Notifier application. A simple google search will take you to the application. Once you install the application and give there your GMail login information, GMail automatically becomes your default mail client. Thereafter you can choose not to use the notifier. Gmail will remain your default mail client unlesss you choose another.
