For those in need.... Sep. 8th, 2008 by Adv. Vandana Nawghare Today everybody's life style depends on advertisements. From early morning it begins with a tooth paste and ends with a good night spray. Not only companies, industries, schools, shops, but also the government publishes advertisements and gives a message to the public. I appreciate today's lifestyle, but I always think, mouth publicity on communication with person-to-person is much more important than this. Our NGO completed one week of eye-donation awareness. Our former Prime Minister late Shri Rajiv Gandhi celebrated his birthday by adopting eye donation campaign in 1985. He announced two weeks programme that starts from August 25 and concludes on Sept 8, as Eye Donation Awareness Week. In India there are crores of blind people - among whom, 50 per cent are with retinal blindness. Disability of corneal blindness can be removed by donating the cornea. Donating eyes; means removal of cornea from the eyes of a dead person after his death and transplanting them into the eyes of a needy person. The Law provides eye donation only after death of a person. There are some guidelines, after the death of a person, like tissues of the eyes are alive for 7-8 hours in good condition. So the relatives can play an important role here. They can cover the eyes with ice and drop liquid medicine in them. Thereafter, they should inform an eye bank. The team at the eye bank should remove the cornea and place it into a certified medicine. Without any operation or disuniformity in the face, in a span of 48 hours, the cornea should be transplanted to the blind person with corneal blindness. The donors are felicitated but the recipients are never mentioned as is in the Law itself. Unfortunately I lost my 17-years-old son, Devanshi on Sept 8, 2006. I donated his eyes to Madha Eye Bank. From that day onwards, to fill in my lacuna, I became a member of this new family. In his memory, I joined social work. I have been honoured as 'The Proud Mother' by The Hitavada, so being a proud mother, I call upon eye donations to all. ________________________________ Notice: This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed.
