Yes indeed. But may I also add a couple of points?

1. If we know that a particular individual has books or open source software to share and willing to do so, then I send my request directly to the recipient rather than the list.

2. My past experience made me realize the fact that when we have people with different points of view on a subject, there will be some who sticking to their guns and henceforth there is no point in cluttering everyone's mailboxes with his/her view even if it is completely rational.

Subject: [AI] Posting on the list- suggestions

Dear Accessindia members,
Most of you will agree that numerous mails are being sent to the list without giving it much thought. I try & do the following before sending any mail to the list. It may be of some help. 1. When I send a mail to the list, I am aware of my responsibility. I am always aware that since the mail is going to a very big list I have to make sure that my mail has relevance to a big portion of the list & accurate information. 2. I read the recent mails sent over the last few days to make sure that I am not repeating anything. 3. I don't just reply to any mail. I read all the mails at of that day to make sure that no one already has sent the information I am thinking of sending. This also helps in avoiding sending redundant information. 4. Although I am confident of my English & typing I read & correct the mail before sending it. 5. I make sure that my email does not have offensive language or is pointing to any specific member.

We AI members have to take more responsibility for the mails we send to the list. We should take it as a valuable opportunity & try & add more & more value to the mails we send. One useless email on the list spoils thousands of minutes of valuable time that the hundreds of list members spend on reading it.
