Subject: [AI] Essay competition for PwDs

Dear all,
This may be of interest.

ALL INDIA ESSAY COMPETITION FOR DISABLED PERSONS ON "EXPECTATIONS OF THE
DISABLED PERSONS AND THEIR SUGGESTIONS ON SUPPORT SCHEMES"

In the context of the forthcoming world disabled day on 3rd Dec.2008,
Nandini Voice for the Deprived, a Chennai based NGO, would organise an All
India essay competition for the disabled persons on the following subject.

"EXPECTATIONS OF THE DISABLED PERSONS AND THEIR SUGGESTIONS ON SUPPORT
SCHEMES"

OBJECTIVE :

More than 2% of the national population constitute disabled persons,
consisting of orthopaedically disabled, visually impaired, hearing/speech
impaired and mentally ill persons. In the state of Tamil Nadu alone ,there
are reported to be around 1.7 million disabled persons.

More than 90% of the disabled persons belong to lower income group. with
inadequate income and family support and lack of education and skill
acquisition opportunities, many disabled persons live in extremely stressful
conditions.

While there are number of governmental schemes and several NGOs are
extending support measures to disabled persons, still the solutions for
their problems in full measure are no where in sight.

It is necessary to give an opportunity to the disabled persons themselves to
express their views and suggest solutions, so that the policy makers and the
concerned NGOs can make their plans to extend support to the disabled
persons , keeping the ground realities in view.

This essay competition is being organised to encourage the disabled persons
to introspect on their problems and suggest solutions based on their own
experience and expectations.

ELIGIBILITY :

The essay competition is open for disabled persons all over India
irrespective of age and educational level.

SIZE OF THE ESSAY :

The essay should not exceed 1000 words and can be written in English, Hindi
or Tamil.

The visually impaired person can write the essay in braille language or can
send an audio cassette. Those who have no literacy and can not write an
essay can send their views in audio cassette.

CASH AWARDS :

Twenty cash awards would be presented to the winners in the All India essay
competition.

Of this, ten cash awards would be presented to those who have studied up to
school level education and the remaining ten cash awards would be presented
to those with higher educational level.

LAST DATE:

The essay should be sent by post or email on or before 15 th Novermber, 2008
