Hello all,
After my posting on this topic, I have received several related queries even on my personal ID. I am giving the information I have on Way Finder Access here.

Wayfinder Access is a navigation system for mobile phones specially developed for visually impaired customers. Together with speech synthesis software, such as Talks from Nuance Communications or Mobile Speak from Code Factory, Wayfinder Access becomes a robust audiable pedestrian navigation experience.

Wayfinder Access includes several useful features for the visually impaired. A continuously proximity scanning of your immediate area helps you discover intersections and other key points of interest such as banks, post offices, restaurants, bars and much more from over 20 million locations*. At the touch of a button, you get efficient door-to-door voice directions from wherever you are to wherever you're heading. In simple words, if you need to go to a particular place in your city & don't know the route, it can help you get there. You can use the search feature & type the name of the colony/company/landmark & search for it. within seconds, it will give you a list of matching locations. For example, I search for NTPC & it gave me list of various NTPC offices in the Delhi region. From the list select where you want to go & mark it as destination. From now on it will start giving you instructions such as, walk 500 meters & then turn left. As you keep moving, it will make announcements at intervals such as turn left after 400 meter, turn left after 300 meters & so on & when you are about to approach the left turn, it will say - turn left here. It also keeps showing the direction with big arrow heads on the screen which even the low vision can pick up. Apart from this, it can tell you the places near you, crossroads around you etc at any point of time. It also tells you in which direction you are moving & what is your speed. With this device, despite being blind you will be guidng the sighted driver!

For using this technology, you need one of the compatible phones(listed below) & a GPS receiver if your phone does not have it built in. GPS receivers are about the size of a match box & can be purchased separately at prices around Rs. 5000. This GPS receiver will connect to your phone using bluetooth.
You also need to have GPRS connection activated on your phone.

Subject: [AI] Way Finder is really useful!

Hello,
I have been using Way Finder recently & have found it to be very effective
&

useful.
My conclusion is that one needs to understand the behaviour of the
software
& then it can be used very well. I had to go to a hotel & then to the
World
Bank office & I relied on this software. I searched for the hotel name &
it
was the first result. It guided me to the place precisely & going to the
world Bank office was also very easy.
Besides it gives you so much information about the locations around you
that

you will learn much more from this about your city as compared to any
source.
If anybody is contemplating to get way finder, my advice is that you
should
go ahead.
