LOUIS BRAILLE BICENTENARY CELEBRATIONS Convener Co-conveners V.SIVARAMAN, M.A., B.Ed., M.SAHADEVAN M.A., M.Phil., Lecturer in English Lecturer in English Presidency College Presidency College 9444406206 9444113981 P.CHADRASEKAR, F.C.A., Chartered Accountant 9444012921 Dear friends, Four Organizations of the Visually Challenged in Tamil Nadu, namely, The Indian Association for the Blind, The Tamil Nadu Association of the Blind, Visually Impaired Women's Association and, The Welfare Foundation of the Blind, all of them affiliates of ALL INDIA CONFEDERATION OF THE BLIND(New Delhi), along with the National Association for the Blind(Tamil Nadu branch) and the National Federation of the Blind (Tamil Nadu branch), have formed a Joint Committee to celebrate the Louis Braille Bi-Centenary Year on a grand scale. The Joint Committee has already conducted a State Level Braille Reading and Writing Competition for the Visually Challenged students studying in 18 Schools all over TamilNadu. An Essay writing competition in both Tamil and English on topics related to the Visually Challenged is also conducted for the Blind students studying in various Colleges of the State. The prizes for the winners of these competitions will be awarded on the 4th of January 2008, at the Louis Braille Bi-Centenary year Meet to be held in Chennai. What is so significant about these competitions is that the braille passages read out by the blind participants have been recorded in cassettes. On 4th January 2009 at P.S. High. Sec. School, Mylapore we are having a day-long Meet on Louis Braille. On that day from 10 a.m to 1 p.m- an Exhibition displaying the special devices for the visually challenged will be conducted by the Worth Trust. The Worth trust has also made arrangements for visually challenged people to become a member of the book share, on library for the blind. The subscription of rs. 400 has to be paid along with the national id for disability. As part of the celebration,, two books are to be released by INDIAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE BLIND and WELFARE FOUNDATION OF THE BLIND. These books carry the biography of Louis Braille and articles on Braille translated from English to Tamil by visually challenged students and teachers. Mr. T.d Dinakar I.A.S, a visually challenged I.A.S officer will be honoured with special achiever award. Mrs. Subbulakshmi Jagadesan, Hon'ble State Minister of Union for Social Justice and Empowerment and Smt. Geetha Jeevan, Hon'ble Minister for Social Welfare, Govt of Tamil Nadu have consented to grace the occasion with their esteemed presence. We welcome all the visually challennged people as well as those who are interested in the empowerment of the disabled to this grand event to be held on Sunday, 4th January 2009 at the venue mentioned above.
