Is it possible for deaf people to enjoy music? I was told that Helen Keller use to enjoy music by feeling vibration--which is something beyond my comprehension. I am sure, we can make out rhythm by a distant vibration but how Melody, musical notations etc can be enjoyed and interpreted by a nonhearing person?
I came across blind photographers, blind sculptural masters blind architects etc. But, I never heard of a deaf, deaf-blind musicians. I know deaf people can be best writers, dancers and can master aesthetics well. My poor mind yet to know how they can enjoy music? I am very much amazed by the way deaf people use language. Some deaf have mastered more than one language. Having no hearing impairment with full verbal affluence, most of the times we find it difficult to learn a second or third language. This is important because attempts are being made to make visual art(s) accessible to blind people. It seems some blinds can enjoy aesthetics to their heart's content. Many museums and art galleries are now accommodating blind people; some blind travellers to such places expressed pleasure and satisfaction in this kind of special accommodation (accessibility.) The arrival of DVS or vds ( correct me) has opened new avenues for enjoyment of visual arts from a vi's perspective. Many blind people in some advanced countries are enjoying movies close to 100% of a sighted person's enjoyment. As I have no idea of dvs, perhaps we cannot get all visual cues from such technological innovations. I am not attempting to insist a some kind of mastery over an art which is possible for a very few people of our entire population. But we all enjoy one or the other kind of arts. Does our disability altogather exclude us from a particular art? What about paintings? Is it completely eliminated from blind people's extraordinary vision, which is still an enigma for most sighted people? p.s. If my words remotely hurt someone, be it blind or deaf , accept my apologies in advance. To unsubscribe send a message to [email protected] with the subject unsubscribe.
