The Hindu News Update Service News Update Service Wednesday, March 4, 2009 : 1150 Hrs Regional DMC uploads names of registered doctors on its website New Delhi (PTI): Want to know whether your friendly neighbourhood doctor is actually a registered medical practitioner or just an unqualified quack posing as a true blue physician? Getting that vital knowledge, which could often spell the difference between life and death, is now just a click away. The Delhi Medical Council launched an addition to its website yesterday where it has listed the names of all registered doctors in the capital together with their addresses and qualifications. The latest list will enable all citizens to locate the right doctors in their localities, the council said. "To know whether the doctor next door to you is a registered practitioner, you just need to log on to the website where you can locate that person by his name, address and his qualification," said Dr Girish Tyagi, Registrar, Delhi Medical Council. The list, available on www.delhimedicalcouncil.nic.in, includes the names of all 40,000 DMC registered doctors and provides an ideal guide to people seeking such information. "There are as many as 40,000 registered medical practitioners in Delhi, who have been listed by the DMC. The list that is available on our website aims at checking medical negligence and quackery," Tyagi said. The doctors can be located by entering their first or last names, their addresses and their qualifications. Although registration with the DMC is mandatory for practicing Allopathy system of medicine in the National Capital Region, a large number of self-proclaimed doctors continue to practice across the area. The move is the latest in the Council's efforts to check the mushrooming of quacks. While it might not end the problem altogether, at least it will help citizens take informed decisions, the council believes. The DMC, which receives hundreds of complaints against such 'doctors', has filed over 70 cases against them in the last 2-3 years. On receiving complaints against unscrupulous practitioners, the DMC gets in touch with the concerned CDMOs and SHOs, who in turn verify their presence. "To check the credentials of such practitioners, we ask them to appear before us with their testimonials, failing which cases are filed against them in courts," Tyagi said. Under powers vested with the DMC under Section 10 (a) of the Delhi Medical Council Act 1997, the Council maintains a live register of qualified medical practitioners.
