Communication plan – training visually impaired for employment

(Venture by TATA Consultancy Services & M.N.B. Industrial Home for the
Blind)

There is a large population of blind and visually impaired in India (45
million or 25% of the world’s blind and visually impaired population).

- Literacy rate : 3%

- No. of Govt. Aided Special Schools for the Visually Impaired :320
(approx.)

- NGO Run Schools: 250 (approx.)

- No. of seats in the Schools : 30,000

In India, the awareness about the capability of visually impaired and blind
is slowly increasing.

Subsequently, a few Corporate have now come forward to employ them.

However, given their academic background (most of the visually impaired in
India have not able to avail the benefits of Science & Technology during
their education), there is need to build their competency.

At present, there is no interface between the courses being offered to the
visually impaired (at various computer training centers) and the IT
Industry. There is a need to bridge this gap and offer industry relevant
courses which would make the VI employable.

TCS through its initiative – Maitree, understands the need to bridge this
gap and has opened an Advanced Computer Training Centre for the visually
impaired at MN Banajee Industrial Home for the Blind at Jogeshwari(W),
Mumbai

After the success of a pilot & 2 All India Batches, TCS - Maitre invites
applications from the VI all over the country to benefit from the course
which is scheduled tentatively in mid May’09.

The course will focus on four major aspects that are likely to enhance the
employability of persons with visual challenge: soft skills, skill-sets
required at the BPO sector (with a specific focus on building competency),
building IT infrastructure and service management for larger organizations,
and testing software in terms of their accessibility for people with special
needs.

Curriculum and Modules for the training

Infrastructure Services (IS) -

- System administration / Operating Systems.

- Computer Networking

- An awareness session on various Microsoft based certifications
