4 THINGS YOU PROBABLY NEVER KNEW YOUR MOBILE PHONE COULD DO
There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies.
Your mobile phone can actually be a Life Saver or an emergency tool for
survival.
Check out the things that you can do with it:
FIRST
Emergency The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112.
If you find yourself out of the coverage area of Your mobile; network and
there is an emergency, Dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing
Network
to establish the emergency number for you, And interestingly this number
112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.
SECOND
Have you locked your keys in the car? Does your car have remote keyless
entry?
This may come in handy someday.
Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your Keys in the car and the
spare keys are at home, Call someone at home on their mobile phone from
your cell
phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the
person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile
phone
on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to Drive
your keys to you.
Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can
reach someone who has the other 'remote' for your car, you can unlock the
doors
(or the trunk). Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it
unlocked our car over a mobile phone!'
THIRD
Hidden Battery Power Imagine your mobile battery is very low. To
activate, press the keys *3370# Your mobile will restart with this
reserve and the Instrument
will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when
you charge your mobile next time.
FOURTH
How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone? To check your Mobile phone's serial
number, Key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 #
A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your
handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.
When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give
them this code. They will then be able to block your handset
So even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally
useless. You probably won't get your phone back,
But at least you know that whoever stole it Can't use/sell it either. If
everybody does this, there would be No point in people stealing mobile
phones.
FIFTH
ATM - PIN Number Reversal - Good to Know.
If you should ever be forced by a robber to Withdraw money from an ATM
machine, you can :
Notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse. For example, if your
pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. The ATM system recognizes
that
your PIN number is Backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine.
The machine will still give you the money you requested, But unknown to
the
robber, the police will be Immediately dispatched to the location.
This information was recently broadcast on CTV by Crime Stoppers, however
it is seldom used because people just don't know about it

Research on violence on women with disabilities
SAFEGUARDING WOMEN: Saroja Prabhakaran releasing a handbook on violence
against women at Avinashilingam University for Women, Coimbatore. Radha
Bai, Head,
Department of History, Government Arts College, Pudukottai is receiving
the first copy.
A large percentage of women with disabilities was facing physical,
psychological and sexual abuse. This was inferred from a research done
here.
The Department of Special Education, Avinashilingam University for Women,
Coimbatore, conducted a research project on "Prevalence of Violence among
Disabled
Girls / Women". This was funded by the University Grants Commission from
2007-09.
The project aimed at identifying the dynamics of abuse encountered by
girls / women with disabilities. It also identified the perpetrators and
their relationship
to the victim. A comprehensive assessment was carried out in Madurai,
Coimbatore and Chennai.
The results showed that 21 per cent were physically abused, 31 per cent
psychologically abused and 12 per cent sexually abused. Twenty eight per
cent were
financially exploited.
Premavathy Vijayan, Head of the Department, Special Education, the
university, released the results of the study and organised a
sensitisation programme
on the topic at the university recently.
Police personnel, lawyers, institutional heads, teachers, service
providers, parents and women with disabilities attended the programme to
get trained to
assist girls / women with disabilities.
Saroja Prabhakaran, Vice-Chancellor of the university, released a handbook
on 'Violence against Disabled Women and Defence Strategies'.

The emergency number does work within the coverage area and your call gets
transmited to the nearest police station. Of course it did not work with
BSNL when I was In India last time, but worked with air-tell. But the rest
such as unlocking the car etc seem to be crap and it has been forwarded to
the list several times. I guess my humble request to the list will be to
check out the archive to make sure that such info do not get forwarded
several times.
Regards,
Vetri.

Hi Rajesh,
When you bought blue-soleil dongle, you should have received a CD for the
driver to be installed. As mentioned before, the program interface is in
Chinese, but you could do a couple of things to pair the device. After
installing the required driver, insert the dongle and turn on your
Bluetooth
connection on the phone. Try to make it visible to other devices. Now
start
the blue-soleil by using the icon on the desktop. Now the screen gets
converted in to the Chinies interface, but at least the phone's name
should
be visible and you can see that by using the JAWS curser or the invisible
curser. A bit tricky, but eventually works after several attempts. Also if
you use headset in your computer, you can hear a very mild humming sound
when your Bluetooth device attached to the computer tries to find other
devices. After being fed-up with blue-soleil, I bought a Broadcom
Bluetooth
dongle and it works fine and menus are interfaced in English. I am sure
that
it will be available in India and it costs around $15 here in the US.

That's correct, but one problem with the program is though it uses the
Chinies interface and thus a bit difficult to predict what exactly there
on
the menu. At least that was the problem I had when I had my first
bluetooth
dongle and after I broke it, I swiched to the standard one and things got
rectified.

That's actually the problem with Mac products. They make a mockery of
accessibility! they claim that their laptops are equipped with a screen
reader, but it is in no way close to JAWS or Windows eyes.

" iHear Dialer
iHear Dialer allows you to dial phone numbers without looking at the
keypad. As you move your hand around on the keypad, the dialer will
tell you what
number your finger is on and when you want that number, just release
your finger!
It was created with blind and visually impaired users in mind, but
it?s also great for anyone to dial a number without looking.
iHear Dialer allows you to:
- Dial phone numbers without looking at the keypad
- Dial your last 6 previous numbers (History tab)
- Choose between 2 voices (Alex & Jules)
- Display or remove hyphens as you dial numbers
- Use it anytime, anywhere...no connections required. "
although this, is no where near to a screen reader for smart phones,
still, accessibility is provided up to some extent.
please download the application or view more information at.
