NAGPUR: In a unique initiative the Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences
University (Mafsu) has launched a diploma course in animal husbandry,

fishery, dairy and dairy products for physically-challenged
students<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Nagpur/Mafsu-diploma-courses-for-deaf--dumb-students/articleshow/4493484.cms>.
The course is an effort towards improving livelihood security for the
physically challenged sections of society.

To begin with, the university is launching the course for deaf and dumb
students of the Deaf and Dumb Industrial Institute (DDII) at Shankar Nagar. The
course
aims<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Nagpur/Mafsu-diploma-courses-for-deaf--dumb-students/articleshow/4493484.cms>
to raise the confidence of these students.

Speaking to TOI about the new initiative, Mafsu vice chancellor Arun Ninawe
said that physically-challenged individuals are generally taught only
vocational jobs like carpentry, caning, tailoring etc. "Mafsu has started this
course to open up a completely new avenue for self-employment and sustainable
livelihood for physically challenged people in rural areas," said Ninawe.

"Managing animals, birds, and fishes is expected to have a good psychological
impact on the human mind, specially for people with special abilities. It gives
a feeling of general well-being as it sends positive signals to the person's
mind. Hence, we are beginning with deaf and dumb individuals," said veterinary
department dean P S Lonkar about the new venture.

Lonkar said that the
university<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Nagpur/Mafsu-diploma-courses-for-deaf--dumb-students/articleshow/4493484.cms>
signed a memorandum of understanding with the DDII in this regard on Tuesday.
The university will provide its concept and content to the institute while the
institute in turn is expected to teach this to its students. "Only trained
teachers trained in sign
language<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Nagpur/Mafsu-diploma-courses-for-deaf--dumb-students/articleshow/4493484.cms>
can actually teach these students. Hence, the university is restricting itself
to providing content. But the certificate for this week-long course will be
jointly provided by Mafsu and DDII," Lonkar said.

To begin with, the university is offering a poultry course but gradually
fish-rearing and animal husbandry courses will also be added to the list of
courses. Initially, the course is being restricted to deaf and dumb students
but the university also said it has plans to take up other normal students
along with these special children, in order to remove the feeling of isolation.
