World Access for the Blind is a non-profit organization that works
to equalize opportunities for the success of blind people through
the use of innovative technologies and strategies to enhance or
replace vision. According to its founder, Dan Kish, a blind mobility
and orientation specialist, World Access works to provide “Visual
Tools” to blind individuals including specially the skills of
echolocation, the technique bats use to navigate without sight. One
goal of World Access is to push the limitations of blind people’s
abilities through participation in recreational sports. Members of its
mountain baking group, Team Bat, are encouraged and trained to ride
solo within the group while retaining control of the bicycle. Many
Team Bat members successfully navigate without sight by using
echolocation.
