Hello,
You may run the disk cleanup utility to delete unnecessary files and it will
decrease the number of files. You may use other utilities like CCleaner for
better results.
As for defragmentation, it reorganises files in sequential sectors. A sector
requires 8196 kb hard disk space. When you are creating a file, its contents
are placed at a particular sector. When you edit this file again and the
file size exceeds the limit 819b kb, the contents are supposed to be written
to the next sector. In case, the next sector is already occupied by another
file, the operating system finds out another empty sector for it. Thus, a
single file may spread over more than one non-contiguous sectors.
Defragmentation checks all sectors and organises the contents in sequential
sectors. It helps reloading the files faster.
With best regards,

Subject: [AI] Query regarding my computer
Hello People
I find that my C drive has more than 200000 files. Is this a cause for
worry? I got the numbers when I finished scanning the computer for
viruses. Is there any way I can decrease the number of files?
Will defragmenting help? What purpose does disc defragmentation serve
actually? Can I go ahead given the fact that the C drive also has my
operating system installed?
Please help.
M.
