Customised software for HSC students planned

Chennai-based expert entrusted with the task

TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University has embarked on a unique initiative
to pave way for introduction of science and computer education at the
higher secondary
level for visually challenged students through developing customised software.

The university will develop the software for Electronics, Computer
Science, Mathematics, Musical Science, and Alternative Medicines, and
subsequently prevail
upon technical universities such as Anna University to introduce
special courses suitable for blind students in Engineering and
Computer Science.

An expert drawn from a reputed Chennai-based institution, R.
Jayachandran, a visually impaired person himself, has been entrusted
with the task of developing
the software. In his capacity as Professor and Head of the Centre for
Developing Tamil Software for the Visually Impaired, Bharathidasan
University, Dr.
Jayachandran interacted with students of Government Blind School for
Girls here earlier this month as a first step of the research. He
assured the students
that visual impairment will not prevent the aspiring ones from
becoming doctors and engineers. Only they need to familiarise
themselves with the talking
software. Taking the help of the University’s Department of Women’s
Studies, the Centre would develop the software and impart training on
its use to volunteers
and to teachers of the school. As part of the research project, the
students and teachers of the school will also be taken on exposure
visit to the university
to gain a general understanding about learning software and the system
of working with Internet. The new software will be experimented in the
school. Prior
to developing the software, Dr. Jayachandran has plans to visit the
various centres — both government and non-government — working with
the blind people,
and visit the University for Visually Handicapped at Madhya Pradesh to
study the progress they have made and explore possibilities for
collaboration.

According to Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko, a Computer and Software
Resource Centre for the Blind will be established in the university.
